I have been playing guitar for over 50 years. In 1992,
motivated by curiosity and boldness, I toured the Martin factory
and bought a Martin D-18 kit. The instructions with the kit
(basically a box of wood with some of the more difficult jobs
already done) were minimal. To complete the kit, I had to do
a lot of independent reading. It was worth the effort.
The instrument that I completed sounded better and was easier to
play than my Martin D-35. Unfortunately, anyone looking at
it could tell that I made it myself. I knew I could do
better. I analyzed what I had done differently from what
Martin had done on my guitar and figured out why it sounded and
played better. I made three more kits before I decided that
the kits were limiting what I could do. At that point,
building guitars became an obsession. It was something I had
to do. To keep building, I had to start selling my
instruments or the house would fill up with guitars. That
was over 100 instruments ago. With every instrument, I
strive to make a better one than the last. My instruments
have been purchased by some very good players and I am thankful
and proud of that.
