Handmade Guitars by Bob Gramann
The Dam Wood Guitar
Around 1854, a wooden crib dam was completed in the Rappahannock River just upstream from Fredericksburg, Virginia to provide water power in Fredericksburg. This dam was submerged in 1909 when the Embrey Dam was completed as part of a venture to generate electricity. That dam was destroyed in February 2004 exposing the crib dam. We retrieved some white oak and some yellow pine, sawed it thin, and dried it. I made this guitar from that wood. The guitar has a small body and quite a nice sound for an instrument of its size made of oak. This is a one-of-a-kind item. It will be auctioned on September 17 as part of the Friends of the Rappahannock Riverfest fundraiser.
